Optimize Your Setup
Before going into selfie mode and hitting the record button, here are a few things to consider.
- Lighting: Choose a well-lighted place. Natural light is often best, but artificial light can work in a pinch. Investing in a ring light or other adaptable light source can be helpful. Look out for shadows and make sure subjects aren’t back lit, otherwise they’ll become a silhouette.
- Camera position: Frame your face and or upper body in the shot. No one wants to see up your nose. Take a test video, and adjust the tripod or add or remove a few books under the camera setup as needed. Position yourself in the frame so there is a balance between you and your background.
- Camera: If recording from your phone, try recording from both the front or the rear camera. Note the difference in frame placement. Most phones have larger apertures and offer higher resolution from the rear camera. Use a tripod or makeshift mount to keep the camera steady. Depending on the type of video format you may choose the wider back camera to include more background over the front camera typically used for selfies.
- Background: Avoid a cluttered or distracting background. If you’re shooting in an office environment, make sure confidential materials and other brand logos are tucked away. You don’t want to inadvertently endorse another brand on your company’s behalf.
- Body language: Video allows people to get a sense about you so be mindful of your body language and how you present yourself when speaking. Maintain a relaxed presence by rehearsing your script. Look directly at the camera, smile, and breathe naturally.
Video Lengths for brand awareness and brand consideration videos, keep the length under 30 seconds. Videos that position thought leadership should stick to a 30-90 second video length. Opt for longer-form video to tell a brand or product story giving more time to effectively share a more complex story. LinkedIn considers 10 minutes the informal cut-off point for video. Use Attractive Video Thumbnails, Titles, and Captions Thumbnails are the picture that people see before they click on your video and start watching it. If you use attractive, captivating thumbnails, people are much more likely to click on your videos and watch them.
- What makes for a good thumbnail?
- An interesting picture that stands out
- Text overlaying the picture that will draw people in
- The good news is that it’s really easy to make thumbnails with your smartphone. Canva makes it incredibly simple to find a great photo and then put captivating text on that photo.
- You also want to give your video a great title. The title is the text that usually sits at the bottom of the video when people see it in their newsfeed. Like the thumbnail, you want the title to cause people to snap to attention when they see it.
- Finally, it’s a good idea to add captions to your videos. Why? Because many people watch videos without the sound turned on.
- There are a variety of programs / apps that can help do this. Descript is an all-in-one editing tool with AI transcription ability to provide easy to use elements that make your videos stand out.
- Optionally is to use a transcription service, such as Rev or Otter.ai, to create transcriptions of your videos and then upload them to the platform. The cost of using these services depends on the length of your video.
